Cores may be made from closed cellular, open cellular, rigid, or syntactic foam types. Closed cellular foam cores have pores or cells that are not interconnected and that are sealed off to an external surface. These foams are useful for buoyancy and flotation applications. Open cellular foam cores feature cells that are interconnected and open to an external surface. Open cell foam cores are useful for filtration applications. Foam cores may also be made from rigid foam materials that offer little-to-no flexibility. They may also be composed of syntactic foams that consist of rigid microspheres that are held together by plastic or resin matrix.
There are also many options for foam core polymer/chemical systems, including ethylene copolymer, expanded polystyrene, expanded polyethylene, polyester, polyether, polyimide, polyolefin, polypropylene, phenolic resin, polyisocyanates, polyurethane, vinyl or PVC, and other speciality compositions. Foam cores may also be filled for reinforcement, thermoset/crosslinked, or undergo thermoplastic softening and hardening. Other materials and options may also be available for foam cores.

Thickness of Foam Core Board
1mm and 2mm thick foam boards are the easiest to cut and can be easily hung with a stapler or with holes. This thickness is used for exhibitors or professional photographers to hang picture collage on the wall.
3mm thick foam board is the best option for presentations, lectures or for a mood board. Mood boards used by interior stylists or designers can be created with foam boards. Most retailers use this type of foam board to create attractive displays.
3mm thick foam board is also a budget-friendly option as they can be used for the same applications as a 5mm thick foam board. Because the panels are cheaper, they are also more flexible and easy to cut.
5mm thick foam board is the most common variety. It is widely used for various signage applications, trade shows, and projects.
10mm thick foam board is used to cover larger surface areas. Sizes of 40” x 60” upwards would need a 10 mm thick foam board, due to its greater strength and rigidity. This thickness is less likely to bend and is the best option for exhibition stands, theater performances or photoshoots.
