Why Choose PMI Foam as a Core Material?

PMI foam significantly simplifies the manufacturing process of composite sandwich structures, shortens production cycles, and fundamentally overcomes the drawbacks of traditional cores:

Compared to Honeycomb Cores: It solves issues like large cell size, moisture absorption, and risk of debonding.

Compared to Traditional Foams (e.g., PVC, PUR): It overcomes low strength, low modulus, and poor heat resistance, thereby greatly enhancing the longevity and reliability of the final composite part.

Core Performance Advantages of PMI Foam

1. Exceptional Specific Strength & Modulus
PMI foam boasts one of the highest specific strength (strength/density) and specific modulus (modulus/density) ratios among all plastic foams. Using PMI core enables the production of lighter, stronger, and stiffer components, preventing instability and improving energy efficiency in applications like aircraft.

2. Outstanding Heat Resistance
Thanks to its unique polymer chain structure (complete imide rings and cross-linking), PMI foam offers excellent performance under heat and pressure. It remains stable in medium-temperature (approx. 130°C) and high-temperature (approx. 180-190°C) co-curing processes such as autoclave and hot press molding, with minimal compression creep. Post-processed at high temperatures, it features low internal stress and exceptional dimensional stability, preventing core collapse or blistering during curing.

3. 100% Closed-Cell Structure

Process Friendliness: Very low and controlled resin absorption, isotropic properties, making it highly suitable for various processes like resin infusion and prepreg molding.

Superior Durability: Eliminates moisture uptake and debonding risks, ensuring long-term structural integrity.

Good Thermal Insulation: The closed-cell structure provides excellent thermal insulation properties.

4. Excellent Fatigue & Mechanical Performance
PMI foam exhibits outstanding fatigue resistance, making it suitable for dynamically loaded parts like helicopter rotor blades. Combined with fiber reinforcements, it enables composite parts with a service life far exceeding that of metal components.

5. Easy Machining: Can be readily cut, milled, and CNC-machined into complex shapes. It can also be thermoformed into curved parts, allowing great design freedom.

6. Strong Adhesion: Its polar molecular structure and porous surface enable excellent chemical bonding with various resins (epoxy, bismaleimide, cyanate ester) during co-curing. Laminating with adhesives allows for thick panel construction.

7. Low Dielectric Constant & Loss
Maintains extremely low dielectric properties over a wide frequency range, making it an ideal core material for radar-transparent structures like aircraft radomes.

8. Low Aluminum Equivalent (Low X-ray Absorption)
When used in medical device components like CT tabletops, it enables clear imaging with minimal radiation dose.
